This stunning image of a bird of prey attacking a gull is a winning photo in Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2010, a competition organised by the Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine.
The picture, titled Snatch and Grab, shows a goshawk swooping down to snatch a herring gull searching for scraps at a rubbish tip near Porvoo, Finland. The image was named winner of the Behaviour: Birds category, which celebrates images of birds doing something interesting or dramatic.
The photograph was the result of five winters’ work by Finnish photographer Arto Juvonen from Koskenkyla.
He said: “I spent many winter days at a local rubbish tip, waiting for a goshawk to appear. I couldn’t resist yelling when I saw the result in the back screen of my camera.”
The image has joined more than 100 other prize-winning photographs from the competition in an exhibition at the Natural History Museum, London.
